Another DIY we can't live without is our Mermaid Spray, a detangler/hair bug repellent all in one. I know Mermaid Spray is typically a salt spray, however Vivi wouldn't let me brush or spray anything in her hair without a meltdown, so I called it mermaid spray, knowing she was obsessed with mermaids, and it stuck. This also doubles as an anti hair bug spray, iykyk. Heading into the school year, this easy DIY comes in clutch. We had them once, and that was one time too many for this mama!
So what's in it? Water, conditioner, and a few essential oils. That's it. So easy that Vivi helps me make it most times. The overall cost once you break it down is comparable to a conventional one, but without any fragrance or parfum, this is the only one I will use on my kids. If you didn't know, when you see fragrance listed as an ingredient, that is an umbrella term. That means that the company doesn't have to disclose what is in the fragrance. Initially this was allowed so that companies could hide proprietary ingredients comprising their fragrance so they wouldn't have copy cats, but has unfortunately become a place they hide ingredients they don't want to disclose. Did you ever go into a store that sells candles, lotions, perfumes, etc. and get a headache? That is from those yucky ingredients that are in their fragrance.
Ok, now that I went off on that tangent, lets get back to our mermaid spray! The essential oils I use for this are great for hair growth, strength and as I said before, they repel bugs. The addition of conditioner helps with detangling.
What you'll need:
A 5 oz spray bottle (I like this one)
Water
Conditioner
10 drops Rosemary eo
10 drops Lavender eo
10 drops Tea Tree eo
10 drops Cedarwood eo

Why these oils?
Rosemary - is great for hair growth and smells amazing. Also a great bug repellent
Lavender - great for nourishing your hair to make it soft and smooth. The calming properties that come with this oil don't hurt either.
Tea tree - prevents build up of product on the hair shaft and is great for repelling bugs
Cedarwood - Strengthens your hair while repelling bugs
As you can see, all of these oils serve multiple purposes. And I know when you see how much it would cost for them, you think "Sheesh. Thats a lot". but consider the fact that all of these oils have even more purpose in your home. You can diffuse them (Lavender and cedarwood together and bedtime are *chefs kiss*), you can cook with Rosemary and Lavender, Tea tree is amazing as a blemish spot treatment, and is also a must in your bug spray (get that recipe here). I also use Rosemary in my home signature scent, with equal parts lemon oil.
This spray has saved us many tears, meltdowns, and the added bonus of bug repellent and hair growth don't hurt either! Once you give it a try, come back and let me know what you think!

Mandi
