Easy DIY natural bug repellent

I am a bug magnet and need bug spray with me at all times. After reading about deet, I wanted to find something a little better for both myself and my kids, and YL has a wonderful insect repellent. While that is easy to grab, I needed one for me, and one for each kid to take to school. One bottle from YL is over $40. You know I LOVE Young Living, but that is a little steep for me! While it does work, I read about this easy DIY natural bug repellent recipe, and after trying it, I’ll never use another bug spray again. It's seriously so easy to make and smells so good!

Essential oils used in natural DIY bug repellent

What you’ll need:

A spray bottle (I like this one)

Splash of witch hazel (unscented)

10 drops Lemongrass eo

10 drops Peppermint eo

15 drops Tea tree eo

15 drops Citronella eo

10 drops Eucalyptus eo (I like eucalyptus radiata in this recipe)

*The bottle size will determine how many drops you need of each oil. Listed above is for a 5 oz bottle. You can modify depending on your bottle size.

Why these oils?

Citronella - a natural bug repellent that works by masking the scents that bugs are attracted to.

Lemongrass - lemongrass contains citronella, so this is a double boost of bug protection.

Peppermint - helps to keep away ticks, ants, spiders, roaches, beetles and fleas

Tea tree - its camphor scent makes the perfect bug repellent for mosquitos, ants, fleas and spiders

Eucalyptus Radiata - impedes the bugs sense of smell, making it hard for them to find you

You can shop these oils here. I know initially this is a lot more money that you would normally spend on a bug spray. For our family, we use these oils for other things to. Diffusing Peppermint and eucalyptus, or a drop or two in your shower makes for a luxurious spa like experience! Tea tree is great for blemishes, and we also use in our mermaid spray to deter a certain bug in our kids hair naturally. Lemongrass is my favorite for my wool dryer balls, giving my laundry a fresh scent, without fragrance. And there are so many other uses for each oil.

I also like to mix up a diffuser bomb (an empty essential oil bottle premixed with these oils) to put in my diffuser outside on summer nights. It works like a dream, and it smells good too! Making small changes to lower your toxic burden is HUGE, and this is one of my favorites. Once you try it, I know you'll love it!
